NVC Course Programme in Packaging I (Live Hybrid with company study visits)

The course

The course programme provides you with a thorough knowledge of the production of packages, the properties and (im)possibilities of packaging materials and the many factors that are important for the adequate use of packages in the packaging process. At the end of the course programme you will be able to analyse the vulnerabilities of the product and, based on this, to determine the right packaging format. You will also learn to identify improvements and/or cost savings through functional analyses of packages and product.
 
Company study visits to production sites of packaging materials, where you actually experience the packaging production processes in practice, are an integral part of the curriculum.  
Classes take place in blocks of three consecutive days per month in Live Hybrid form. Live Hybrid lessons at NVC enables the student to be physically present or to follow the class live online, from any location worldwide.
 
Throughout the entire programme you are supported by the NVC Online learning environment and thus have the teaching materials, the curriculum, the preparations and practice questions permanently online at your disposal. In addition to the live lessons and company study visits, you can replay the (recordings of the) lessons and the underlying learning materials at any given time and location.

The training language is business English in order to maximise the effectiveness of functioning in the business organisation and because a substantial amount of packaging terminology and literature is in English. This means that both teaching materials, assignments and lessons are in English. When using English, the level of language proficiency of the business students is taken into account and in general this goes well. For whom?

The course programme is intended for those who are (partly) responsible for the business decisions concerning the packaging process (production, engineering). These include the design of packaging, the choices for packaging materials and packaging machines.
In their work, they need a holistic view of packaging in combination with the cognitive and practical skills to successfully find creative and applicable solutions to the packaging issues that the organisation is facing. 
 
More than 700 business professionals have now completed their training and obtained the international EQF5 Referenced Diploma NVC Packaging Professional.

Programme

Product packaging combinations (3 days)
The impact of products on the choice of packaging material and the impact of packaging materials on the product is the core topic of this education programme. Starting points are use -  and product functionalities. You gain insight into the various players in the packaging process and into the requirements for a packaging throughout the entire supply chain of packaged products.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

  • Functionalities of packaging (1 day)
  • Vulnerabilities of products (1 day)
  • Testing methods (0,5 day)
  • Durable and dangerous goods (0,5 day)

Packaging materials (12,5 days)
Specific characteristics and behaviour of packaging materials affect product packaging combinations. Knowledge and understanding of these materials offers the opportunity to find more efficient packaging solutions and implement cost savings.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

  • Wood (0,5 day)
  • Paper and board (2 days)
  • Metal (1 day)
  • Plastics (rigid and flexible) (4,5 days)
  • Biopolymers (0,5 day)
  • Glass (1 day)
  • Printing techniques (1 day)
  • Adhesives (2 day)
  • Specifications (1 day)

Legislation and regulation (1,5 day)
Specific laws, regulations and directives are applicable in the supply chain of packaged products. These implicate consequences for e.g. transportation, marketing and storage of packaged products. The education programme focusses on dealing with and complying to these laws and regulations, including labelling requirements and the Essential Requirements.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

  • Essential requirements, packaging and environment (0,5 day)
  • Legislation of food contact materials and labelling legislation (0,5 day)
  • Hazardous substances (0,5 day)

Processes (2,5 days)
Various elements such as legislation, characteristics of materials and functionalities of packaging come together in these lessons and provide insight into the integral process of packaging. Packaging machines, dosing and closing processes are discussed, and afterwards you are familiar with packaging lines and you know what machines to use for which purpose.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

  • Machine techniques (2 days)
  • Packaging Processes (0,5 day)

Business administration (2,5 days)
Besides production and the more technical aspects of packaging processes, business aspects of packaged products  have to be taken into account as well. This education programme focusses on the market value of packaging, distribution and cost saving throughout the supply chain of packaged products.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

  • Marketing perception (1 day)
  • Cost savings (0,5 day)
  • Distribution (1 day)

Exam practicing (1 day)
During the last day of the course programme students will be prepared for the exam with class room assignments, examples of exam questions and questions of students.

Planning

The course programme consists of 23 days over a ten-months period of time. The lessons and corresponding company visits are scheduled in blocks of three consecutive days per month.
Time table on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 09:30AM until 4:00PM.

Method

The lessons are given Live Hybrid where the students can choose whether or not to be physically present at the location of the lesson.
 
All lessons will be recorded. They can be reviewed by the students from the 24/7 NVC online learning environment at any time. All course material is also available in the 24/7 online learning environment for study before, during or after the lessons. 
 
The lessons are taught by live tutors, supported by an NVC E-Course Technical Teaching Assistant (ETEA). The tutor answers all student questions during and, if desired, after the lessons.
 
 

Admission advice

To participate in this program, at least a higher professional education level of thinking and working is desired, as well as a basic knowledge of packaging and/or expertise in a specific field (such as chemical technology or food technology), acquired through work experience and/or education.

Diploma

The course programme is followed by the independent EQF5 (European Qualifications Framework) referenced international exam. Upon passing, you will receive the diploma NVC Packaging Professional I during the annual Graduation Ceremony NVC Packaging Professionals.
