Programme

Product packaging combinations (3 days)
The impact of products on the choice of packaging material and the impact of packaging materials on the product is the core topic of this education programme. Starting points are use -  and product functionalities. You gain insight into the various players in the packaging process and into the requirements for a packaging throughout the entire supply chain of packaged products.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

• Functionalities of packaging (1 day)
• Vulnerabilities of products (1 day)
• Testing methods (0,5 day)
• Durable and dangerous goods (0,5 day)

Packaging materials (12,5 days)
Specific characteristics and behaviour of packaging materials affect product packaging combinations. Knowledge and understanding of these materials offers the opportunity to find more efficient packaging solutions and implement cost savings.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

• Wood (0,5 day)
• Paper and board (2 days)
• Metal (1 day)
• Plastics (rigid and flexible) (4,5 days)
• Biopolymers (0,5 day)
• Glass (1 day)
• Printing techniques (1 day)
• Adhesives (2 day)
• Specifications (1 day)

Legislation and regulation (1,5 day)
Specific laws, regulations and directives are applicable in the supply chain of packaged products. These implicate consequences for e.g. transportation, marketing and storage of packaged products. The education programme focusses on dealing with and complying to these laws and regulations, including labelling requirements and the Essential Requirements.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

• Essential requirements, packaging and environment (0,5 day)
• Legislation of food contact materials and labelling legislation (0,5 day)
• Hazardous substances (0,5 day)

Processes (2,5 days)
Various elements such as legislation, characteristics of materials and functionalities of packaging come together in these lessons and provide insight into the integral process of packaging. Packaging machines, dosing and closing processes are discussed, and afterwards you are familiar with packaging lines and you know what machines to use for which purpose.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

• Machine techniques (2 days)
• Packaging Processes (0,5 day)

Business administration (2,5 days)
Besides production and the more technical aspects of packaging processes, business aspects of packaged products  have to be taken into account as well. This education programme focusses on the market value of packaging, distribution and cost saving throughout the supply chain of packaged products.

These subjects will be taught in the following lessons:

• Marketing perception (1 day)
• Cost savings (0,5 day)
• Distribution (1 day)

Exam practicing (1 day)
During the last day of the course programme students will be prepared for the exam with class room assignments, examples of exam questions and questions of students.

Planning

The course programme consists of 23 days over a ten-months period of time. The lessons and corresponding company visits are scheduled in blocks of three consecutive days per month.
Time table on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 09:30AM until 4:00PM.

Diploma

The course programme is followed by the independent EQF5 (European Qualifications Framework) referenced international exam. Upon passing, you will receive the diploma NVC Packaging Professional I during the annual Graduation Ceremony NVC Packaging Professionals.

Graduates are included in the Register of NVC Packaging Professionals. For more information about this register, please contact Oscar Faber.

Costs

NVC members pay € 8.540,00. Non-members pay € 10.150,00.

Costs include coffee/tea, lunch and the hand-outs, but do not include VAT, accommodation and travel costs and examination costs.

Examination costs can be found on the website of the Stichting NVC Examens. These costs will be invoiced by the Stichting NVC Examens at the end of the course.
