USA: Hawaii will re-examine advance disposal fee on glass containers
Since 1994, Hawaii has placed an advance disposal fee on glass containers to prevent their landfill disposal. The fee is currently 1.5 cents per container, and it is paid by manufacturers, importers, and distributors that introduce 5,000 or more glass containers into the state annually. Beverage containers are exempt as they are covered by the state container deposit scheme.
The 2014 Hawaii State Legislature has recently approved a resolution directing the Department of Health to examine the advance disposal fee program to determine whether there are more cost-effective ways of handling recyclable glass, including local alternatives (State Recycling Laws Update, 5 May 2014).
