USA: Massachusetts voters reject expansion deposit scheme

11 November 2014

Massachusetts voters have overwhelmingly rejected a ballot initiative (Question 2) that would have expanded the container deposit scheme to include bottled water, sports drinks and some other non-carbonated beverages. The ballot initiative would also have allowed the deposit amount, which is five cents, to be adjusted upward to reflect (to the nearest whole cent) changes in the consumer price index, and it included some changes and exemptions involving beverage dealers. A number of environmental groups have issued statements saying they would evaluate the loss and consider a different strategy to boost beverage container recycling (State Recycling Laws Update, 7 November 2014).
