USA: Connecticut General Assembly to consider Bottle Bill expansion
Under Connecticut SB 67, sponsored by the Senate Committee on Environment, juices, tea, and sport drinks would be added to the list of beverages covered by the state’s five-cent container deposit, enacted in 1978. Mineral water would remain exempted.
A beverage container is the individual, separate, sealed glass, metal or plastic bottle, can, jar or carton. Bottles, cans, jars or cartons of 3 liters or more in size if containing a noncarbonated beverage or made of high-density polyethylene are not included. The change, if approved, would take effect on October 1, 2014. The bill was referred to the Joint Committee on Environment (State Recycling Laws Update, 17 February 2014).
