UK: one third of products mislabelled

In the context of the ‘fake food’ scandal, in which substitution of cheaper ingredients for expensive materials is a recurring problem, a test conducted by West Yorkshire councils revealed that more than a third of 900 products were mislabelled or not the product they were claimed to be.
Local authorities, which are responsible for testing food, reduced food controls due to budget cuts. The risk of food fraud, e.g. drinks with banned flame-retardant additives, pork in beef, and fake cheese, subsequently increases. The Food Standards Agency FSA has increased the funding to support local authorities to carry out this work to almost €2.5 million (The Guardian, 8 February 2014).
