US Maine: Bill introduced to end container deposit scheme
The Maine Returnable Beverage Container Law was enacted in 1976. It places a 5-to-15 cent fee, depending on the type of beverage, on covered beverage containers having 4 liters or less in volume.
On April 2 2015, SP 432 was introduced, which would essentially end charging deposits on covered beverage containers 32 ounces or more in volume effective December 1, 2016. The container deposit fees would be replaced on December 1, 2016 with a “recycling fee” per beverage container paid by beverage producers and distributors. However, the bill repeals the recycling fee on December 1, 2022, so it would exist for only six years (State Recycling Laws Update, 6 April 2015).
