UK: Members of Parliament call for container deposit scheme
An early day motion was introduced in the House of Commons to establish a container deposit scheme in the United Kingdom. Early Day Motion 656 was signed by 10 other MPs. The motion “calls on the Government to follow the example of other nations and introduce a mandatory deposit return scheme in the UK by including it in the National Litter Strategy.”
While the exchange of words drew some attention in the UK media, an early day motion is similar to a resolution in that takes a position on an issue but has no legislative force. Separately, Scotland is considering establishing its own container deposit scheme (Recycling Laws International, 21 November 2016).
