Retail and e-commerce - June 2022
Developments in retail
Ecommerce Europe reports that the Chamber of Digital Economy has commissioned a B2B report (2.32 MB) which confirms that over 90% of companies offering products, services, and solutions to businesses are planning to develop e-commerce channels. Already 41% of companies are now active in this market and consider their entry into this area of business to be a success, with one in four companies obtaining more than 80% of their revenue from e-commerce.
CBS (in Dutch) has published the Online Platforms Monitor 2021, which examines the development of turnover, the number of people employed, and sales of businesses via online platforms in the Netherlands in recent years. Three specific types of online platforms are also discussed, namely job placement platforms, free services and commercial platforms.
Customer behaviour in e-commerce
Duo Plastics has published a report on how the Gen Z generation will shape the future of packaging. The report includes the habits of Gen Z consumers, the growing re-commerce market, and how this will reshape retail supply chains. The report also shows how retailers’ packaging strategies need to adapt not only to meet the needs of Gen Z consumers, but to prioritise a circular approach to reduce their environmental impact. Shopping preferences
According to Lightspeed (in Dutch), 34% of the Dutch retailers are still only active with a physical shop. More than half of the shopkeepers do plan to invest more this year in digital possibilities to also sell online. You can download the report after filling in your details.
Ayden has published their Retail report which states that 64% of consumers prefer to shop in a physical shop. Despite the increase in online shopping during the pandemic, consumers still feel the need to visit a physical location. You can download the report after filling in your details.
According to Smithers, the e-commerce packaging market is settling into slower growth as COVID-19 declines. Consumers who have been deprived of the physical shopping experience over the last couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, have welcomed the reopening of in-person shopping in most markets.
E-commerce packaging and drone delivery
Research by US Packaging and Wrapping shows that meals are not always packaged efficiently in the US. The global meal box sector is experiencing significant growth due to consumer demand for healthy and convenient meals. In the US alone, the market is worth $11.6 billion.
Amazon customers in Lockeford, California, will be among the first to receive Prime Air drone deliveries in the U.S. Their feedback about Prime Air, with drones delivering packages in their backyards, will help create a service that will safely scale to meet the needs of customers.
Reusable concepts in retail
ECR Community has published a report providing insight into how retail and CPG companies are implementing circular economy solutions. It contains case studies on circular economy activities in areas such as packaging, waste management, food waste and digital solutions. A few of those case studies are about reusable packaging concepts in retail. You can download the report after filling in your details.
