Potential danger of plastics to marine environment
The sea is inevitably the recipient of solid matter, intentionally disposed of or accidentally lost. The haphazard disposal of plastic material on land and from ships results in littering of beaches and seriously damages marine wildlife, mainly sea mammals, sea birds, reptiles etc.
Many marine species are known to be harmed either through entanglement in and ingestion of plastic litter, which could jeopardize their survival, since many are endangered already. Researchers at the College of Fishery Science in India investigated the dangers of plastics to the marine environment. An article about the research was published in Continental J. Environmental Sciences.
