Review of bio-nanocomposite materials for food packaging

18 December 2014

Numerous biopolymers have been exploited to develop biodegradable food packaging materials. However, usage of biopolymers has been limited due to the poor mechanical and barrier properties. These properties can be enhanced by adding reinforcing nano-sized compounds or fillers to form composites. Nanofillers have the ability to improve these properties as well as exhibit other desired applications such as antimicrobial agent, biosensor, and oxygen scavengers. Researchers at Universiti Putra Malaysia have reviewed variety types of biopolymer and nano-sized filler used to form bio-nanocomposite materials. An article about the review is published in Agriculture and Agricultural Science Procedia 2.
