Extending storage life of cherry tomatoes with chitosan film
Researchers at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand investigated the feasibility of active packaging from chitosan (CS) and chitosan containing nanosized titanium dioxide (CT) to maintain quality and extend storage life of climacteric fruit. The films were fabricated using a solution casting method and used as active packaging to delay ripening process of cherry tomatoes.
The results suggested that the CT film exhibited ethylene photodegradation activity when exposed to UV light and consequently delayed the ripening process and changes in the quality of the tomatoes. An article about the research is published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules.
