Standards for testing non-reclosable child-resistant packaging
Two EU standards have been published specifying performance requirements and test methods for non-reclosable child resistant packaging. NEN-EN 14375:2016 is for pharmaceutical products and NEN-EN 862:2016 is for non-pharmaceutical products.
In both standards testing is carried out with 2 panels: a test with young children of between 42-51 months old and a test with adults of between 50-70 years old. To minimize the exposure of children to unnecessary testing, the adult test should be carried out first. For non-pharmaceutical products the adult test is optional unless a tool is supplied to open the container at the point of sale (World Packaging Standardisation Newsletter, October 2016).
