NL: Ban on free plastic bags still planned to start 01-01-2016

Recently a number of articles have been published suggesting that the ban on free plastic bags is postponed, one of the reasons being the resignation of state secretary Mansveld. NVC has checked with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and the aim is still to have the regulations come into force on 1 January 2016. The draft regulations will be discussed during the House Committee debate on 17 December 2015.
The regulations introduce a ban on giving away free plastic bags at points of sale. The ban applies to all plastic bags, including compostable and biodegradable bags, regardless of how thick or thin they are, even though there are some exceptions.
