NL: Plastic most found waste in the rivers Maas and Waal

16 February 2018

Research on litter on the banks of the rivers Maas and Waal shows that 60% of this waste consists of plastic. Beverage packaging, among which plastic bottles, caps and sleeves, together with cans, snack packaging and undefinable pieces of plastic form the main source of pollution in rivers and on riverbanks. Every 100 meters of riverbank contains on average 40 beverage packs.
In the summer of 2017, large-scale research was started to investigate the amount, composition and origin of waste in the Maas and Waal for the coming years. The goal is to create an overview of which types of waste are transported to the sea by the rivers (News Item Clean Rivers, 16 January 2018).
