NL: No exemption for use of plastic bags in online food retail

26 April 2017

The exemption for the use of plastic bags in online food retail that Thuiswinkel.org had lobbied for doesn’t seem to apply. One of the reasons is that this sector uses standard plastic carrier bags, unlike the shipment bags used in the online retail of non-food products. This would mean that online food retailers would have to ask for a fee for every plastic bag that is used in a clearly visible way.
By now, Thuiswinkel.org has negotiated an agreement with the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (IL&T). Thuiswinkel.org will set out to develop a packaging strategy with its members. In exchange, they are temporarily exempted from sanctions (News Item Thuiswinkel.org, 30 March 2017).
