NL: No ban on bisphenol A (BPA) in coatings yet

26 January 2017

A study by RIVM shows that the exposure to BPA needs to be reduced, but minister Schippers (Health, Welfare and Sport) does not want a ban on the use of BPA (yet). The alternative substances have not been proven to be definitely safer, or the effects have not been thoroughly investigated. A ban should not be pursued, because it will force producers to use alternatives of which the safety has not been properly investigated.
The minister confirms her position once again in a letter to Wemos. In this letter, she also mentions that EFSA does not see any reasons to adapt the current limits, also because BPA will be evaluated again in 2017 (Newsletter Waar&Wet, 20 December 2016).
