NL: Government to recognise sustainable Malaysian wood

31 August 2015

The Government of the Netherlands wants to recognise the Malaysian sustainable wood certificate MTCS for the governmental purchase policy. After a number of visits to Malaysia there do not seem to be any more obstacles left. The Malaysian authorities have shown that their forestry management is sustainable.
Malaysia is the most important supplier of tropical hardwood for the Dutch market. In 2014 the Netherlands imported more than €94 million worth of Malaysian wood. With the recognition of MTCS wood the use of sustainable wood will strongly increase. The Netherlands is the only EU country that does not recognise MTSC (News Item Government of the Netherlands, 14 July 2015).
