NL e-commerce: Research on ‘air’ in packaging

Salvum has done research that was commissioned by Topsector Logistiek on the inefficiencies of air in packaging. Next to e-commerce, this research was aimed at various other segments in the logistic services. The research is specifically aimed at discovering what causes the costs to increase and where the opportunities lie to improve the capacity utilization.
The research has uncovered many inefficiencies. On average, 30 to 40% of the content of packaging is empty space. Up until now, there has not been much incentive for the parcel delivery services in the Netherlands to start working with Dimensional Weight Pricing (DWP) as a way to prevent over packing.
