NL: Advice about extending list with exceptions expiry dates

28 September 2016

In 2010 and 2013, on average each consumer threw away respectively 44 kg and 47 kg of food that was suitable for consumption. One of the reasons for this food waste is the expiry of the best before or use by date on the products. This is also the case for products that are probably still of good quality and would not pose a problem for the food safety.
The Office for Risk Assessment and Research of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) gave advice on the possibilities for extending the list of products that are exempted from the requirement of the mandatory date of minimum durability or the ‘use by’ date (News Item NVWA, 13 September 2016).
