New EU-project: Reducing food waste across Europe

25 September 2015

Recently the EU-project "Resource Efficient Food and dRink for the Entire Supply cHain" (REFRESH) was started. The project partners will work towards the goal to contribute towards the objectives of reducing food waste across Europe by 30% by 2025, reducing waste management costs, and maximizing the value from unavoidable food waste and packaging materials.
Modelling suggests that if nothing is done, food waste could rise to over 120 million tonnes by 2020. Together with moving to healthier diets reducing food waste both in and out of the home is the most significant demand-side measure for reducing the carbon impact of the food system (News Article Wageningen UR, 14 September 2015).
