Candy becomes plastic – Winner TEDxAmsterdam Award 2014

Gerben Stouten works at the Delft University of Technology. His pitch is about waste & resources in a circular economy. In short we should not just recycle waste; we should aim to produce new resources from it. What better way to do that than to learn from nature, as nature simply does not have any waste?
The Environmental Biotechnology group went to the largest candy factory in the world, where they produce candy bars and a lot of candy waste water. They created an environment that allows a very peculiar group of organisms to thrive in there. The microbial fat of the organisms can be transformed into bioplastic (News Release TEDxAmsterdam, 28 November 2014).
