According to PMMI, the demand for meat, poultry, and seafood packaging is predicted to increase by a CAGR of 3% to 3.5% from 2022 to 2025. A TU Berlin article (2.68 MB) on the role of disposable packaging in everyday food consumption is published in the European Journal of Cultural and Political Sociology.
According to the Sustainable Food Monitor (in Dutch, 610 kB) published by WUR, Dutch consumers are spending more and more on products with sustainability labels. The share of sustainable food in total food spending increased from 17% in 2020 to 19% in 2021.
NL: Petition for user-friendlier medicine packaging
ReumaNederland (in Dutch) has handed over a petition to the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport and the Medicines Evaluation Board (in Dutch). With the petition, the patient organisation pleads for user-friendlier medicine packaging. Meanwhile, ReumaNederland is working with the University of Twente on a user-friendly pill strip. The prototype is expected to be out of the test phase before the end of this year.
Packaging and sustainability
According to Giulia Granato, there is a lot of greenwashing when it comes to packaging, which makes consumers sceptical. For her thesis (3.45 MB) at WUR, she investigated ways companies’ and consumers’ routines can be disrupted to achieve more sustainable behaviour. She found that certain combinations of explicit and implicit cues worked to signal the sustainability of the packaging. She is also the main author of an article (8.66 MB) published in the Journal of Cleaner Production on how consumers trade-off conventional packaging benefits against sustainability.
A new report by Drapers, in partnership with Smurfit Kappa highlights fashion consumers’ desire for businesses to validate sustainable packaging claims.
