Consumer trends
In the report Global Consumer Trends 2030 Mintel discusses the seven core drivers of consumer behaviour that will shape global markets over the next 10 years. You can download the report after filling in your details. The first of Deloitte’s biweekly global surveys on the impact of Covid-19 shows that consumers in most countries intend to curb their spending to make ends meet. More information can be found here.

Consumers – sustainability and food waste
Consumers International, UNEP and One Planet Network have released their global assessment of recycling and sustainability labelling on plastic packaging. The research (12.07 MB) found that only 19% of the assessed labels give consumers quality information to make informed recycling and purchasing decisions. Two-thirds of the consumers support carbon labelling on products according to a new international survey (1.23 MB) commissioned by the Carbon Trust. According to new research (1.29 MB) by Trivium Packaging, 74% of consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable packaging.
According to a new study from Karlstad University, choosing serving size packages and smaller packages is better for the climate. It also shows that consumers' uncertainty over date labels and food safety are major contributing factors to food waste. An article (552 kB) about the research is published in the Journal of Cleaner Production. WRAP has published new guidance (3.78 MB) urging more businesses, redistribution organisations and charities in the UK to look beyond the Best Before date. The advice is relevant to all householders, not just surplus food.

(Bio)plastics market
A new report by Clarivate Analytics shows that the bioplastics packaging market is at an early developmental stage with no dominant company or entity. You can download the report after filling in your details.
An IK member survey shows that Covid-19 is affecting German manufacturers of plastic packaging in many different ways. An NRK (in Dutch) member survey shows that the corona crisis will hit the NL plastics industry harder and harder in the coming months with a low point after the summer.

Packaging printing
Drupa has published the 7th drupa Global Trends Report 2020 (executive summary, 844 kB). The survey, conducted before the outbreak of Covid-19, shows that global print remains positive with the packaging and functional market sectors better placed than publishing and commercial. Heidelberg presents its Print Media Industry Climate Report with weekly updates on the development of print volumes in the packaging and label printing and commercial printing market segments.

Purchasing packaging, contract packaging and reusable packaging systems
For the L.E.K. Consulting 2020 Brand Owner Packaging Study 287 brand owners where surveyed in January 2020. Some 48% of brand owners report that they will boost packaging investment over the next year — an increase from the 41% last year. You can read more in the executive summary (1.009 kB).
