LCA on beverage packaging waste in Denmark

30 August 2018

Currently, Denmark has a system under which certain beverage products (e.g. beer, carbonated soft drinks and water) may only be marketed in packaging covered by a deposit and return system. In a recent report DTU Environment analyses the disposal of packaging from beverages not covered by the current deposit system.
The aim is to assess the environmental impacts of alternatives for the management of beverage packaging waste. Three different disposal options were assessed: 1) High quality recycling via the deposit and return system; 2) Collection, sorting and recycling via the existing system for recyclables and 3) Incineration within the residual waste stream.
