ISO standard for enhancing ease of opening published
A common challenge facing the packaging industry is to develop packages which are easy to open. In March 2015 a standard was published that specifies requirements and recommendations for the accessible design for packaging with a focus on ease of opening. The standard ISO 17480 applies to reclosable and non-reclosable consumer packaging without using any other mechanical means.
The standard gives general and specific considerations. The general considerations include context of use, opening strength, dexterity and cognition. The specific considerations include opening location and methods and mechanisms of opening the package (World Packaging Standardisation Newsletter, April 2015).
