Insight in hidden costs helps to make sustainable choices
It was first available for French consumers, but now Belgian supermarket customers can also determine what a pack of milk costs. Through a website, they vote about the income the farmer should receive, how many months the cows stay in the field, and about the packaging: plastic or paperboard. This way they influence the conditions for producing the milk and they take responsibility for the production costs and the price of the product.
To find out if consumers are open to having more influence on food production, ABN AMRO and GfK asked 1,072 consumers about their information need for four popular fruits: pears, mangos, avocados and bananas (News Item ABN AMRO, 9 February 2018).
