Fighting food waste in Denmark
A new study (Food waste prevention in Denmark) assesses the potential environmental savings in avoidable food waste in the individual sectors of the Danish food supply chain. The study uses five food categories as basis for the assessment: meat, milk & dairy, bakery, dry products and fruits & vegetables.
The potential environmental savings achievable are significant for all the environmental categories investigated. For example, more than 2 million tonne of Greenhouse Gases could be saved per year if 100% of the avoidable food waste was prevented, corresponding to about 3.8% of the total emission of Denmark in 2014 (News Item Danish Environmental Protection Agency, 7 April 2017).
