France: Bill introduced in Assembly would ban oxo-biodegradable plastics

04 February 2014

A bill to ban the distribution of plastic bags containing oxo-degradable, oxo-biodegradable or oxo-fragmentative additives was introduced in the French Assembly in January 2014. According to Assembly Bill No. 1682, oxo-degradable-, oxo-biodegradable- and oxo-fragmentative-plastics, sometimes used to produce single-use carryout bags, pose several environmental concerns.
One of the concerns is that, unlike European standard EN 13432 for biodegradable material, no similar standard for oxo-biodegradable material has been established. The bill was referred to the Committee on Sustainable Development and Planning (Recycling Laws International, 17 January 2014).
