France: Rules requiring plain packaging for cigarettes announced
The French Health Minister Marisol Touraine has announced an ambitious new plan to reduce tobacco use in France. One of the measures is the requirement that cigarettes be sold in plain packaging to make them less attractive. The packaging would be standardized; all the same shape, size, and color and featuring the same typography. In Australia plain packaging for cigarettes in already implemented and this has led to a large increase of phone calls to the quit line; 78% more than the month before the measure was implemented.
A number of other measures are stated in the plan, including prohibiting smoking in cars (News Item French Government, 25 September 2014).
