Food packaging: Active film based on corn starch and chitosan

23 November 2017

Researchers at Planta Piloto de Ingeniería Química (UNS-CONICET) in Argentina developed a package prototype for perishable food products. They used antimicrobial biodegradable films based on thermoplastic corn starch (TPS) and chitosan oligomers (CO).
They used the film in sachets in which they packaged perishable foods such as strawberries, ricotta, and flavored breads. The products were then stored for 7 days under controlled conditions. They found that CO incorporation in the packaging material resulted in a more efficient way to inhibit microbial development than the spraying technique. An article about the research is published in Food Packaging and Shelf Life.
