Philippines: Senate resolution signals possible changes to Solid Waste Management Act
Philippine Republic Act No. 9004 (Ecological Solid Waste Management Act) is a broad piece of environmental legislation that addresses concerns ranging from the open air dumps to packaging.
In May Senator Grace L. Po introduced a Senate Resolution calling on the Senate to conduct a review of the implementation of the Act and “other pertinent laws and local ordinances with the end in view of increasing penalties against offenders to further protect the declining state of the environment and ultimately avert a garbage crisis.” Issues contributing to the perceived emerging solid waste include a lack of adequate enforcement of littering ordinances (Recycling Laws International, 23 May 2014).
