EU: Proposal for end-of-waste criteria for plastic
The Institute for Prospective Technological Studies of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) has published a technical proposal for establishing end-of-waste criteria for plastic. A key quality requirement is a recommended 2% maximum limit on non-plastic contaminants in plastic waste. Under the revised EU Waste Framework Directive, specified waste materials will no longer be classified as waste when they have undergone recovery and certain conditions have been met. The Commission’s Directorate-General for the Environment (DG ENV) will review the JRC’s technical proposals, consult with industry and other stakeholders, and determine any final legal requirements and specifications (Recycling Laws International, 31 October 2014).
