EU Parliament: Proposals for cutting food waste

01 May 2017

EU members of parliament have put forward a number of possible measures to cut the amount of food waste by half by 2030. They called on the European Commission to lift existing restrictions on food donations and stressed a solution is needed for the confusion created for many consumers by the “best before” and “use by” labelling.
EU countries should achieve food waste cuts by 50% by 2030, reiterating the objective Parliament set out in its waste legislation voted in March 2017. In the EU, food waste has been estimated at some 88 million tonnes, or 173 kg per capita per year, emitting around 170 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (News Item European Parliament, 11 April 2017).
