EU JRC: New thematic report - Science for food
The Joint Research Centre (JRC) has released a new report on its scientific support to EU's "from farm to fork" policy which ensures Europeans enjoy safe and nutritious food, while facilitating the food industry to work under the best possible conditions.
In the report the JRC recognises that packaging plays a critical role to protect food against contamination and is essential to maximise shelf life. There are currently more than 930 substances authorised for plastics alone, and only 28 official detection methods exist. The JRC deems it essential to develop further suitable methods for measuring migration of chemicals from packaging into food (News item Joint Research Centre, 13 May 2015).
