Dutch ‘Consumentenbond’ claims producers to be dishonest on sugar in food
The Dutch consumer association claims that producers often attempt to circumvent the presence of sugar in their food products or even mislead consumers. Roughly 50 different names of sugary ingredients were found. The consumentenbond established the ‘Sugar Pillory’, with the aim of sharing information about sugars in products and to inform consumers.
The FNLI reports that ingredients have to be listed with their legal name, for sugars to be found in the ‘Warenwetbesluit sugars’. The claim ‘no added sugar’ is only allowed on condition that no mono- or disaccharides, or any other ingredients added as sweeteners, are present in the product (Waar en Wet, 29 January 2014).
