Chemical recycling the answer to plastic waste?

The collection of used plastic packaging - formerly known as ‘waste’ - has increased considerably in recent years and is expected to increase further as mandatory targets are set and public acceptance for non-recycling is dropping. The search is on for techniques to improve the resulting material stream.
Chemical recycling could play a key part in dealing with this, reports research institute TNO. In chemical recycling processes, plastic waste is purified and chemically separated into new, pure chemical building blocks. When it comes to processing complex plastics, chemical recycling is the only option, says TNO (News Item TNO, 8 May 2018 in combination with an elucidating video).
