Cans continue to outrun the market in 2012
The Beverage Can Makers of Europe (BCME) report that can production in Europe has increased by a healthy 4% in the first half of 2012. After such a vibrant start to the year, production slowed in quarter 2 but still managed to record growth. Events such as the London 2012 Olympics have helped boost can sales.
Soft drinks remained flat year on year during the quarter while beer can production was up by 3%. Both soft drinks and beer cans are continuing to outperform the market and gaining share on other pack formats.
Beer cans are rising at a quicker rate than soft drinks in 2012. While soft drinks in cans are still in growth this year, there is no doubt that the soft drinks demand has been suppressed by the cool and damp conditions endured by a number of influential markets. Refreshment requirements are interlinked with sunshine; thirst increases with temperatures (BCME News, september 2012).
