Bio-based polymers compared to petroleum based polymers

23 April 2015

Bio-based polymers can displace incumbent petroleum-based polymers in a market exceeding $100 billion. They face challenges, like inferior mechanical properties and processability, that limit their potential in some high-volume markets, but their biodegradability can make them a valuable choice in a number of markets.
In the new Lux Research “Comparing the Performance and Addressable Markets for Bio-based Polymers” analysts evaluated the performance of four bio-based polymers. They found, among other things, that PLA shows promise for food packaging for products that don't require oxygen barriers and PBS shows promise for medicine packaging (News Item Lux Research, 31 March 2015).
