Bio-based aromatics: waste product or innovation?

25 June 2014

Aromatics are important raw materials for plastics, coatings and special chemicals. But for ECN they have effectively always been a waste product of biomass. That was until this April, when researchers conducted a successful test to recover them with a yield of no less than 97%.
What makes the new ECN process so special is that the aromatics are extracted from green gas rather than oil. This means that bio-styrene could be produced instead of styrene. Or even bio-ethylene rather than ethylene. And there is huge demand for such substances from industrial companies looking to “green” their products and manufacturing processes (News Item ECN, 5 June 2014).
