Determining biodegradation of plastic in aqueous environment

21 October 2016

Recently three standards were published specifying methods for determining the degree of biodegradation of plastics in an aqueous environment. NEN-ISO 14853:2016 specifies a method for the determination of the ultimate anaerobic biodegradability of plastics by anaerobic microorganisms.
The two other standards specify test methods to determine the degree and rate of aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials when settled on marine sandy sediment at the interface between seawater and the seafloor. In NEN-ISO 18830:2016 the oxygen demand in a closed respirometer is measured. In NEN-ISO 19679:2016 the evolved carbon dioxide is measured (World Packaging Standardisation Newsletter, October 2016).
