Using attractive packaging to promote healthy food to children
Researchers at the University of Bonn in Germany found that if the packaging has an appealing design, primary school children also reach for healthy foods. Children could choose between 3 identical muesli snacks with different packaging: plain standard packaging, packaging with additional health information and packaging with cartoon characters and an attractive product name.
The results show that the children's motivation was greatest for the snack in the packaging with the cartoon characters. Also in the taste test, the snack with the cartoon characters scored best. An article about the research is published in Frontiers in Psychology (Press Release University of Bonn, 23 June 2015).
