Added water to meat and fish products must be stated on label

01 May 2018

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has given the meat industry until 10 July to properly label all meat and fish packs. The supervisory authority has confirmed this in response to questions of Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant. At the moment, Dutch supermarkets sell meat and fish products with labels that do not accurately state the amount of added water.
Since December 2014 producers who add water to meat and fish products are required by European Regulations to put ‘water’ on the ingredients list. In October last year the NVWA pointed out to the Dutch Meat Products Association (VNV) that this is not always done correctly (de Volkskrant, 19 April 2018).
