Solar cells for self-sustainable intelligent packaging

26 March 2015

Nowadays there is a strong demand for intelligent packaging that allows owners, vendors and consumers to know the contents and interact with the goods. This is of particular relevance for products like identification tags, medical diagnostic tests, and devices for analysis and/or quality control in food and pharmaceutical industry.
Researchers at CENIMAT in Portugal have produced thin-film amorphous silicon solar cells on liquid packaging cardboard commonly used in the food and beverage industry. This provides a flexible, renewable and extremely cheap autonomous energy packaging system. An article about the research is published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry A.
