Value of rib design for carton food containers

Ribbing is a popular design feature that has been applied for a long time to food packaging, especially plastic bottles and metal cans. Recently, Tetra Pak has started to get interested in developing innovative carton containers which are inspired by rib designs.
Researchers at Lund University in Sweden studied the ribs’ functions on food packaging and the consumers’ perception toward rib designs. According to the literature review and the research on 100 Swedish consumers, ribs have both pros and cons but the former surpasses the latter. Based on the findings of ribs’ functions and consumer perception toward ribs, ten rib design concepts for Tetra Pak containers are suggested.
