USA: State-wide single-use plastic bag ban in California
A last minute reconsideration of SB 270 has led to legislative approval. SB 270 implements a state-wide single-use plastic bag ban beginning on July 1, 2015 for large supermarkets. A year later the ban will be extended to convenience food stores, foodmarts, and entities engaged in the sale of a limited line of goods, or goods intended to be consumed off premises, and that hold a specified license with regard to alcoholic beverages.
The bill also requires that stores provide recycled paper bags, reusable bags and, in some locations, compostable bags, for not less than 10 cents each. Reusable bags would need to meet required specifications (State Recycling Laws Update, 8 September 2014).
