USA: Bill to broaden upcoming Honolulu (Hawaii) plastic bag ban introduced
In 2012, the Honolulu City (and County) Council passed an ordinance to ban the distribution of all non-recyclable paper and non-biodegradable plastic bags. While the ban does not take effect until 1 July 2015, a bill introduced recently in the City Council would change it. Bill 38, sponsored by Council Member Breene Harimoto, would extend the upcoming ban to include biodegradable plastic bags. Bill 38 would also delay the effective date of the current bag ordinance by six months or to 1 January 2016.
Lacking a state law, all Hawaiian counties have enacted some type of plastic bag ordinance although the ordinances are not uniform (State Recycling Laws Update, 9 May 2014).
