USA: FDA agrees to new deadlines on Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has agreed to new deadlines for final rules detailing the implementation of the FSMA. The failure to meet the initial deadline of 30 November 2012 prompted a lawsuit brought by the Centre of Food Safety and the Centre of Environmental Health.
The settlement agreed to a new set of staggered deadlines for issuing final rules under a court-overseen schedule, running from 30 August 2015 to 31 May 2016. Topics to be dealt with are preventative controls for human and animal food, imported food and foreign suppliers, produce safety, food transportation and intentional adulteration of food (News Release Food Safety News, 21 February 2014).
