USA: California sugar-sweetened beverages safety warning bill passes Senate Health Committee
California Senate Bill 1000, introduced February 2014, has passed the Senate Health Committee. It intends to protect consumers in the fight against obesity and diabetes by ensuring awareness of the adverse health effects of frequent sugar drink consumption.
The bill would place a warning on the front of all beverage containers with added sweeteners that have 75 or more calories per 12 ounces. The text of the warning would be ‘State of California Safety Warning: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay.’ Next steps for the bill are approval by the Senate Committee on Appropriations and full Senate floor vote (Senate Bill 1000, 27 March 2014).
