USA: U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) proposes rule to enhance consumer protection by ensuring retailers can track sources of ground meats
The rule would improve traceability of contaminated raw ground products and prevent foodborne illness, as the FSIS would be able to conduct recalls timelier and maintain improved records on sources of the ground products. Retailers are required to keep clear records identifying the source, supplier and names of all ingredients used in the preparation of raw ground beef products.
The proposal is in line with FSIS efforts to target food safety prevention to secure public health. It has been posted July 16th on the FSIS website and will be published in the Federal Register. Stakeholders are invited to submit comments via the online Federal eRulemaking Portal (News Release FSIS, 16 July 2014).
