Study challenges plastic packaging in relation to food waste

01 May 2018

A comprehensive study conducted by several EU-related organisations is challenging the ‘conventional wisdom’ that plastic packaging as such is preventing food waste. The study (“How throwaway plastic is failing to solve Europe’s food waste problem – and what we need to do instead”) uses statistical data and possible correlations to argue that the functionalities provided by packaging deserve further analysis to identify where and how these contribute to the fight against food waste.
Cases are brought forward where current packaging functions may even contribute to an increase in the waste of both food and used packaging materials (News Item Friends of the Earth Europe, 10 April 2018).
